What is Marital Status Discrimination?
Conduct that is directed at an individual because of that individual’s marital or familial status and that subjects the individual to differential treatment so as to interfere with or limit the ability of the individual to participate in, or benefit from, the services, activities, or privileges provided by the university or otherwise adversely affects the individual’s employment or education.
Examples Can Include:
- Not hiring someone because of their marital status.
- Offering specific benefits to employees based on their marital status.
- Firing an individual because they are married to a felon.
- Getting better hours because an individual is single, and the belief is that singles are more flexible with their time.
- An employee that is transferred to a different location cannot be fired due to their spouse’s refuses to move
