Academic Reinstatement Process
The term of academic suspension is one year (3 semesters, including summer). During academic suspension, students cannot enroll in classes at Minnesota State Mankato. They may attend other colleges or universities by following that institution’s admissions procedure.
Students with documented extenuating circumstances or an eligible Student Success Plan completed with University Advising can apply in less than one year via the appeal for early reinstatement outlined at the bottom of this page.
Re-Enrollment After Suspension
Students who complete their term of academic suspension (3 terms, including summer) qualify for re-enrollment to the university. To re-enroll, students are required to meet with an Academic Recovery Advising advisor in the University Advising Center to complete a Student Success Plan and to select courses.
- Advisors recommend that students schedule this appointment 2-3 months before they want to return to maximize course availability.
- The course schedule for the intended reenrollment semester must be posted before the re-enrollment process can begin. In general, schedules for summer and fall are published in late February and schedules for spring are published in October.
- This meeting must occur no less than one calendar month before the start of the semester they want to return. (That is, no later than July 1 for fall terms and December 1 for spring terms.)
- Advisors generally do not recommend that students return during summer. Coursework is concentrated over fewer weeks and may not help students' transition back to the university.
During this first appointment, students will work with an Academic Recovery advisor to complete a Student Success Plan, to discuss relevant resources, and to review suggested courses for the next term. Once this is complete, students will wait for email confirmation that their suspension hold has been updated and they are eligible to register. An Academic Recovery advisor will reach out to schedule additional check-in appointments over the course of the students’ first semester back.

EARLY Reinstatement with Extenuating Circumstances
Some students may be eligible to apply for early reinstatement, that is, before the year of suspension ends. Appeals for early reinstatement must meet one of the following situations:
- The student experienced some form of extenuating circumstances (situations outside of their control - such as severe medical conditions or a death in the family) that affected their ability to make academic progress, and they are able to provide evidence to document the circumstances.
- The student created a Student Success Plan with University Advising in the first half of the term in which they were on warning status, met regularly with their UA advisor, and demonstrated significant progress in that semester.
Follow the steps outlined below:
- Complete the online Application for Early Reinstatement from Academic Suspension form.
- Use your official MavMail email address. The decision will be sent to this address.
- Compose and attach a letter that explains the rationale for the appeal.
- Attach evidence of the rationale for the appeal (i.e., documentation of the extenuating circumstance or an eligible Student Success Plan). Students with medical extenuating circumstances are encouraged to have the Medical Verification Form completed by their healthcare provider. Appeals lacking supporting evidence will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.
Applications for reinstatement may be submitted at any time, and we urge students to not wait until the deadline to submit their appeals. The last date to submit an appeal is 4:00pm CST 14 days before the semester students are seeking reinstatement. The semester deadlines will be:
- Summer 2025 – May 5, 2025
- Fall 2025 – August 11, 2025
- Spring 2026 – January 5, 2026
Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed.
