Academic Reinstatement Process

Generally students who were academically suspended cannot enroll in classes for one year (3 terms, including summer). Students with documented extenuating circumstances or a completed Student Success Plan with University Advising can apply sooner than one year away via early reinstatement processes (outlined at the bottom of this page.)

Re-Enrollment After Suspension

Students who have been out for at least one year (3 terms, including summer) qualify for re-enrollment to the university. Students MUST attend a scheduled appointment with the advising center of their majors to do a Success Plan and select courses by no later than ONE calendar month before the start of the semester they want to returen. Please note:

  • Advisors recommend that students schedule this appointment 2-3 months before they want to return to maximize course availability.
  • Advisors generally do NOT recommend that students return during summer. Coursework is concentrated over fewer weeks, and may not help students' transition back to the university.

During this appointment, students will work with an advisor to do a Student Success Plan, to discuss their plans for returning to the university, including resources to support their return and courses to assist them in achieving their goals. After the appointment, students will receive email confirmation when their suspension hold has been updated, and they are eligible to register. When the new semester begins, students check-in with their advising team about progress they are making toward their Student Success Plan goals.

Please see the list of college advising office/centers below. If students do not know the college of their major, click on the college link for a list of majors in that college. If students are undecided about their major, they should work with the University Advising Center.

EARLY Reinstatement with Extenuating Circumstances

Students wtih documented extenuating circumstances or a Student Success Plan with University Advising may be eligible for early reinstatement (less than 3 terms out) after suspension. Students applying for this need to carefully read all the instructions below before starting the reinstatement application. Applications for reinstatement must be submitted to the Office of the Provost by 4 p.m. CST on the deadline date. Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed.

Deadline: 14 days before the semester students are seeking reinstatement

  • Spring 2024 - January 2, 2024
  • Summer 2024 - April 29, 2024
  • Fall 2024 - August 12, 2024

Follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Applications for early reinstatement are not encouraged unless: (a) students had documentable extenuating circumstances (situations outside of their control - such as severe medical conditions or a death in the family) that affected their ability to make academic progress, or (b) they completed a University Advising Student Success Plan, and made significant progress during their most recent semester.
  2. Students who had an extenuating circumstance or a completed University Advising Student Success Plan can complete an Application for Early Reinstatement from Academic Suspension.
  3. PLEASE NOTE: If students do not attach some form of documentation or a completed Student Success Plan, the early reinstatement application will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed. Students will be encouraged to go through the reinstatement process after one year. Students with medical extenuating circumstances are encouraged to have the Medical Verification Form completed by their healthcare provider.
  4. Students need to complete the application, and submit before the deadline noted above.
  5. After submission, students need to continue to check email regarding their application status.
