What does Sex protected class status mean?
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on, among others, an individual’s sex. A victim of sex discrimination and/or harassment can be of either sex.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination, on the basis of sex, in employment. Discrimination against an individual because of that individual’s actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression is discrimination on the basis of sex in violation of Title VII. Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded education programs and activities.
Sex Discrimination
Conduct that is directed at an individual because that individual’s sex, and that subjects the individual to differential treatment so as to interfere with or limit the ability of the individual to participate in, or benefit from, the services, activities, or privileges…
Sex-based Harassment
Verbal or physical conduct that is directed at an individual because that individual’s sex, and that is sufficiently severe, pervasive, or persistent so as to have the purpose or effect of creating a hostile work or educational environment.
Sexual Harassment
A form of sexual discrimination which is prohibited by state and federal law. Sexual harassment includes unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, sexually motivated physical conduct, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature
Target of Discrimination or Harassment
If you feel physically threatened, remove yourself from the situation and seek help immediately from University Security at 389-2111, or dial 911 for the Mankato Police Department. If the situation is not physically threatening, and you feel comfortable talking to the individual.
Can Discrimination or Harassment Happen to You?
Discrimination or harassment can occur in a variety of relationships, including faculty - student, supervisor - employee, student - student, employee - employee, and other relationships with persons having business with or visiting the campus.
