What is Age Harassment?

Verbal or physical conduct that is directed at an individual because of that individual’s age, and that is sufficiently severe, pervasive, or persistent so as to have the purpose or effect of creating a hostile work or educational environment.

Examples can include:

  • Persistent offensive or derogatory comments about an individual’s age.
  • Gestures, such as walking with a cane, toward individuals over the age of 40.
  • Comments referring to individuals of a specific age as the “Centrum Silver crowd.”
  • Offensive age-based jokes.
